Book News: August 25, 2017

Check out this week’s happenings!

So this week was actually super quiet and I was wondering what on earth I would include this post, and then this happened:

And then Twitter pretty much exploded. You can find a really thorough article here that details the whole thing, but basically it turns out that a book literally came out of nowhere to knock The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas off the top of the New York Times bestsellers list.

As it turns out, someone was calling around to different bookstores and placing orders just small enough not to trigger an asterisk in the bestsellers list denoting bulk orders. So essentially someone bought their way to the top of the list, and the whole story got so big that the New York Times updated their list:

The whole thing is totally wild, and thanks so much to my friend Julia for notifying me right when it started happening! Some of my favorite tweets resulting from the whole thing are:

One other piece of news I wanted to share is that Tor is serializing Brandon Sanderson’s upcoming book Oathbringer, releasing installments each week in the lead up to its Nov. 14 release.

I haven’t read The Stormlight Archives yet (to be honest, the only Sanderson novel I’ve read is the first Mistborn book), but I think this is such a neat idea. I’d love to see other publishers do this!

Preorder Deets:

Kendare Blake has announced a preorder offer for One Dark Throne! Submit your proof of preorder here and get Three Dark Crowns playing cards. Three Dark Crowns is on my tbr, but I might have to read it soon so I can make the call on whether I need these cards. They look pretty awesome!

Other links:

I found this website through a BookRiot newsletter and think it’s so neat! Throughout the month of August, the Read a Romance Month website is posting a series of brief interviews with romance authors about why they write romance and what romance means to them. They have 75 interviews up this month as of today, plus almost 20 more scheduled for the rest of the month. I highly recommend checking them out! Plus, you can go back through their archives from previous years and find an interview with pretty much all of the major romance authors. It’s pretty neat and really makes me want to pick up a romance!
