So I always joke that I’m an embarrassment to the Millennial name because I’m pretty anti-social media for someone my age. It’s just not something I normally use much, other than having an Instagram account to look at pretty pictures and adorable dogs. But since starting my blog, I’ve made more of an effort to be active on social media, especially Twitter, so of course a large part of that is following publishers, authors, and other book-related accounts.

Courtney Milan

Courtney Milan is a huge name in the historical romance world, but I wasn’t the biggest fan of the first book of hers that I read, so it took me a while to finally try another one of her books. Unsurprisingly, she wasn’t someone that I immediately followed when I started actively using Twitter. But she kept popping up in my feed because other authors I followed kept interacting with her and retweeting what she had to say. It didn’t take long to realize that Milan is a really thoughtful person and has a lot of smart and insightful things to say. She’s one of my favorites in my feed because she does such a great job calling attention to important issues in the romance community and educating people on why they matter. Seriously, she does so much that she doesn’t have to and that I’m sure a lot of people take for granted, but I for one am incredibly appreciative. And I think she’s worth following even if you’re not interested in the romance genre because a lot of what she has to say applies across genres. Plus she’s the mother of the T. rex emoji. How badass is that? And she has an adorable dog. Also, I’m happy to report that I’ve since tried her books again and really enjoyed the second one I read, so I have a huge backlist of hers to wade through!

Bree Bridges (Kit Rocha)

I actually haven’t read anything that Bree Bridges, who co-writes as Kit Rocha, has written, and unlike Milan, I hadn’t even heard of Kit Rocha before I joined Twitter. So I’ll admit, it’s more than a little odd that she’s on this list. Not going to lie, I totally starting following her for her pictures of her adorable dog Lyra that kept popping up in my feed, and I’ve never looked back. While I still totally adore her dog and love how much Bridges posts photos of her, a lot of what makes her one of my favorite authors to follow is that she also has a lot of smart things to say about the romance and how the romance community needs to change. Plus I really enjoy hearing her perspective as a self-published author (Courtney Milan, too!). Rest assured, I have since downloaded one of her books and really need to read it sometime soon! Because given how much I enjoy her on Twitter, I’m pretty positive I’m going to love her books as well.

Celeste Ng

So, uh, Celeste Ng might be the second author on this list whose books I technically haven’t read yet…I swear, I fully plan to read my copy of Little Fires Everywhere soon! I can’t remember exactly why I decided to follow her, but I think she had a number of tweets that kept showing up in my feed, and I just engaged with them enough that I finally had to follow her even though I haven’t gotten around to her books just yet. She posts a bunch of interesting articles and has some really interesting insights, plus she’s funny! I’m especially a fan of this tweet pointing out the similarities between a Trump appointee and Dolores Umbridge (once you see it, you can’t unsee it!). She’s been an excellent addition to my Twitter feed and is definitely one of my favorites!

Alisha Rai

So Alisha Rai is delightful, and I feel like she’s probably a favorite for everyone who follows her. I mean, how can you not love someone who gets this excited about a unicorn onesie (and later photoshops herself into a photo of the Williams sisters wearing the same outfit!), is obsessed with this amazing typewriter purse, and shares behind-the-scenes pics from photo shoots with hunky models? She’s just so much fun to follow and frequently makes me laugh, making her one of my favorites to follow on social media. But wait, it gets better! Rai also has a lot of amazing insights and commentary on the romance genre, especially when it comes to diversity, and she’s another great author to follow if you’re looking for someone with really smart things to say. Also, she’s the first author on this list that I followed after reading some of her books, and I definitely recommend checking them out, especially the Forbidden Hearts series!

Alyssa Cole

Not to make this list too romance-heavy, but how could I not include Alyssa Cole? Cole also has a lot of smart commentary on the romance community, especially regarding its lack of diversity, and has introduced a range of funny and interesting topics into my feed, plus she just seems like someone who’d be fun to hang out with. I mean, how awesome is this picture of her randomly wearing a tiara at a castle shortly before the release of A Princess in Theory? And there’s this whole situation with a crab that she had to sort out (I would have been freaking out so hard). Plus her husband found a stray cat! My feed is now full of adorable photos of the tiny Tico, and it’s glorious. And her husband is apparently a cat whisperer, because he just came home with three more kittens, and this account is so cute I can’t stand it. She’s definitely worth a follow!

Mackenzi Lee

I really enjoy Mackenzi Lee‘s presence on Twitter and think she tweets a lot of important things, especially in regards to the YA genre and LGBTQ+ community. Plus she’s pretty funny. But I think what elevates her to a favorite for me is the recommendations series she does on Epic Reads’ YouTube channel. I really enjoy being a part of the online book community, but sometimes it feels like a bubble where we all shout about the same books. So it’s such a breath of fresh air when Lee posts a new video and I’ve heard of maybe one out of five books that she’s recommending. It’s really helping me expand my reading horizons and has me excited to read all kinds of books I might never have found on my own. Plus getting a better sense of her personality in these videos just makes me enjoy her Twitter content that much more!

Victoria Schwab

I almost forgot to include Victoria Schwab on this list, and I actually have no idea what I was thinking! She also tweets a lot of funny and interesting things and has some really good commentary on the YA and fantasy genres as well as LGBTQ+ issues. Plus I love it when she requests recs because it spawns huge lists of books (or miscellaneous other items) for me to explore. And she has the most adorable cats! But I think my favorite thing about her presence on social media is how much she talks about her writing process and motivation and self care. I’m not an aspiring writer, but I think what she has to say is really inspiring regardless of what you want to do with your life. And I really like how upfront she is about how difficult it is to be a writer and what it’s actually like to be a part of the publishing industry. I definitely recommend following her on Twitter and checking out her Instagram stories.

So there you have it! A small sampling of some of my favorite authors that I follow on Twitter. These are some of the ones that stick out as my absolute favorites, but honestly, there are a lot of authors on social media that I really like following. I wouldn’t be following them if I didn’t enjoy their content!

Conversely, I want mention that there are plenty of authors I love that have little to no social media presence, and that doesn’t negatively impact my love of their works in any way whatsoever. But it’s fun when an author enjoys social media and you get to know a bit more about their personality, plus I think it’s really enriched my reading experience overall to have their insights and commentary in my life.
