I thought it might be fun to change it up a bit and talk about what I’ve been reading lately, as well as what I’m hoping to get to during Dewey’s 24-Hour Readathon.

As you might have seen in the first part of my April wrap up, my reading month did not get off to the best start. I really didn’t have much of a chance to read, and what I did read was mostly just ok (with one exception). I’ve since read a book that is definitely my favorite of the month so far and will possibly be one of my favorites of the year, but you’ll hear more about that in the second part of my April wrap up. Plus a few other good books that have helped redeem April for me.

Right now, though, I’ve been sucked into the world that is Maisey Yates’ Copper Ridge series. My book club picked the second book in the series, Brokedown Cowboy, for our May meeting. I’m personally not the biggest fan of small-town or cowboy romances—my extended family is from rural North Dakota, and let’s just say I know enough about small-town life that I don’t find it overly romantic and I have no interest in living it myself.

So while my experience with small towns and ranches occasionally pulls me out of the Copper Ridge books, I’m totally hooked. Seriously, I checked out Brokedown Cowboy as part of a package of the first three books and two novellas. And within three days, I’ve read the second and third books, the first novella, and am currently halfway through the first book, which I figured I should go back and read. (To be honest, I might have finished it by the time this post goes up.) Let’s just say I have the fourth one on hold and the fifth one checked out, and I am probably going to race through the rest of this series. I’m actually really excited for some of the later books, because my friend Holly (hi Holly!) is a big Maisey Yates fan and said books number six, eight, and nine are some of her favorites.

Of course I plan to continue working on the series during the Readathon today (it started right when I scheduled this post to go up!), though once I finish Part Time Cowboy and catch up on the novellas, I’m going to have to wait for my hold on One Night Charmer to come through.

Fortunately, I do have a few other books I’m hoping to make some progress on. Although I do have plans today, so I can’t read all day, but they’re fun plans that I’m excited for, so I’m not too disappointed.

For one, I’m going to finish listening to You Can’t Touch My Hair by Phoebe Robinson when I work out today. I’ve had some ups and downs with this book—overall I think it’s good, but I don’t necessary have the same type of humor as Robinson, and some of her jokes are getting a little repetitive (so many LOLs and hashtags!). I’m really enjoying this last section, though, so I’m looking forward to finishing it. It’s a series of letters to her niece about being biracial and a girl, and it’s really good.

I’ve also started on The Dark Prophecy by Rick Riordan. This is the second book in the Trials of Apollo series, and I figure I should catch up before the third one comes out next week. After dragging my feet on this one for a while and being a bit underwhelmed by the last book in the Magnus Chase trilogy, I’m surprised at how much I’m enjoying this one so far!

And last but not least, I want to start (and maybe finish?) Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan this weekend. That will more likely happen tomorrow rather than today, but we’ll see. I’ve been meaning to read this book for a long time, and I’m extra excited to pick it up after the trailer for the film was released earlier this week! It’s a bit of a long book, which has actually intimidated me a bit (I’m all for long fantasy books and biographies, but it generally seems excessive to me to go over 400 pages in most other genres), but I think it’ll be a pretty fast read once I get into it.

Then there’s the Avon Addict box that just showed up on my doorstep on Friday, and it may or may not have an arc of Sarah MacLean’s upcoming book, Wicked and the Wallflower, in it…we’ll see if I decide to read that this weekend or save it for the long weekend I’m taking next weekend.

So that’s what I’ve been reading lately, and what I’m hoping to get to this weekend. If I decide I need some nonfiction, I also want to start reading My Own Words by Ruth Bader Ginsburg with Mary Hartnett and Wendy Williams. Actually, now that I think about it, I should make an effort to read a few chapters of that this weekend if I have time.

Oh, and I’ll need a new audiobook once I finish You Can’t Touch My Hair! I’m not sure if I’ll start a new one yet this weekend, but I have I Can’t Make This Up by Kevin Hart on my Audible account, so I’m thinking of listening to that next. Though the comments in my audiobook post are kind of making me want to listen to Scrappy Little Nobody by Anna Kendrick next, so we’ll see!
