Happy Read a Book Day! I don’t know about you, but that’s pretty much every day of my life. I’m more than happy to have an official holiday to celebrate with, though! So in honor of National Read a Book Day, I thought I’d share what I’m currently reading.

I’m actually in the middle of reading The Storm Runner by J.C. Cervantes! This is the second book being published in the Rick Riordan Presents imprint, and it follows Zane Obispo, a disabled kid who finds out his dad is a Mayan god after he gets caught up in a prophecy to release the Mayan death god Ah-Puch.

I’ve been really enjoying this one so far. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of the storyline of a kid finding out his or her parent is a god that passed on magical powers that get them caught up in crazy prophecies, and I really like Zane’s voice and learning more about Mayan mythology. Cervantes is doing an amazing job with this one so far, and I can’t wait to find out what happens next! I’ll post a more thorough review once I finish it, but you’ll definitely want to check out The Storm Runner when it hits shelves on September 18.

I’m technically reading two other books right now according to my Goodreads, though I haven’t been actively reading them for a while. I got several chapters in to Dating You, Hating You by Christina Lauren before I realized it wasn’t what I was in the mood for and picked up something else. I’ll definitely be circling back and finishing it sometime this month, as I don’t think it will take me long to flip through this book. It seemed like a pretty fast read.

I’ve also made a dent in Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier earlier this summer, but I wasn’t particularly enjoying it, so I decided to take a break from it for a while and just haven’t gotten back to it yet, choosing instead to focus on some of the other books I had been reading for a while—seriously, I’ve been reading four or more books at a time for months and am just now starting to shrink it down. I just saw it was named the pick of the month for Emma Watson’s book club, Our Shared Shelf, which is giving me extra motivation to get back to this book. My goal is to have zero active books on my Goodreads at some point this month before I balloon back to three or more!

I also want to mention two major milestones in my reading that I hit this last weekend: I finally finished John Adams and the Copper Ridge series!

I started John Adams back in June, and while I was enjoying it, I just wasn’t in the mood to read a biography this summer, so it took me a long time to work my way through. Like I said, I finally got sick of having so many books on my Currently Reading shelf on Goodreads (also, the physical stack on my nightstand was getting out of control), so I made myself go back and finish this. Unsurprisingly, once I got into it again, it was easy for me to keep going since John Adams is such an interesting person and lived in such interesting times. I can see why this is such a popular biography and why it won the Pulitzer Prize. I definitely recommend this if you enjoy history and a good biography!

I’m also really pleased that I finally finished Maisey Yates’ 10-book Copper Ridge series! These books are addicting, and I really enjoyed getting to know all of the people introduced from the town of Copper Ridge and seeing their stories play out. I will admit, they started getting rather repetitive towards the end. Like, the heroes and heroines didn’t really feel that distinctive from book to book. And for some reason I started noticing this really specific writing technique that Yates uses in which she’ll write a sentence, and then repeat part of it in a fragment, and then break it down into an even shorter fragment and rephrase it with synonymous words. It’s really not like me to notice something like that, which means she really overused this technique (at least in my opinion), and it’s to the point where it irritates me every time I see it. And by the last book, it was popping up a lot. So while I enjoy Yates’ books and do plan to continue with her Gold Valley series (my friend swears they’re even better than the Copper Ridge books), I need to take a break for a while before I finally continue.

So yeah, I’m really pleased I finished John Adams and the Copper Ridge series, and I’m really enjoying The Storm Runner. Once I finish it, I think I’ll pick up The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton—I’m in the mood for a good mystery and this comes out later this month, so I want to read it sooner rather than later. Once I finish that, then I think I’ll finally get around to finishing Dating You, Hating You and Rebecca.
